Posts: 69 (09/28/05 01:41 PM) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	(reposted since the archive of this forum got fried a while back) ----------------------------------------------------------- Merchandise Service has commissioned The N Scale Architect to produce HARRIS tower in HO and N scales. HARRIS protected the western end of the Harrisburg, Pa., passenger station. It was built by the PRR and was succeeded by Penn Central and Amtrak... right on the mainline of the Norfolk Southern, and previously Conrail. Today it is restored by the Harrisburg Chapter of the NRHS. This will be a limited release -- 50 in each scale -- and is the first in a series of anticipated tower projects. Combined scale reservations are now in the 40's. We will go into production when a total of 60 kits are reserved. PRR had a tendency to name it's towers for features or towns abbreviated that they were in or near. I don't know where the tower was located, but I am wondering if an Armstrong plant was located nearby? I certainly like the "concourse suspended over the tracks" that both Lancaster and Harrisburg exhibit. I don't know how common this was elsewhere. And with Lancaster you'd get the stockyards as a kind of 'scenic bonus'.

Armstrong's Lancaster cork plant is a stiff stones through away from the location of the tower. Cork tower is just off the end of the REA building attached to Lancaster station. The tower is all part of the Lancaster station complex. The basement of the tower contains a large air compressor to generate the necessary air for the air actuated switch machines. There are air pipes running all over the area from the tower, out to the many switch machines around. Even today, with the tower closed, the air compressor is maintained to feed the switch machines. As a kid I used to sit up in the tower with the operators, and watch them. It was great, and the model board was super neat. It still showed tracks, and switches long removed. They just crossed them out on the board with a magic marker, and locked out the switch lever.

I visit the station in June 2008. take 100 pictures, but I have not get all the information I need. Can some one tell me the size of the tower? I have got the Harris tower from N-scale; this will be the base of my model.
