What is the standard height of the PRR seven position trackside signal and what is it measured from? From top of rail to center light, etc? Also, distance
from outside rail? Jim

Jim,
In Jeff Scherb's book, "Trackside on the Pennsylvania, Standard Plans of the Standard Railroad of the World, Structures, Bridges, Signals, and Signs" the position light drawing suggests 17' from the base of the signal to the center of the middle light. I seem to remember the target being 4'4", so it would be another 2'2" to the top of the target. The plan gives no dimension for the distance out from the rail. On the signal bridge drawing this dimension is given is "7' 1.75" minimum", so that might give you an idea. Jamie Bothwell |

Jamie,
That's what I was looking for - thanks. It's probably not in the book, but I think it would be fair to assume that they tried to set the base of the signal to a standard point like at rail level, roadbed level, etc, so the signal head would appear at the same height to the engineer. If the ground fell off at a particular point, I would guess that they would build a concrete or other type of foundation to raise the base of the signal. Also, what color were the PRR pole signals painted? I would assume black for the targets and their hoods, but where the poles, supports, and ladder typically painted black also or where they silver/steel color? Thanks again. Jim |

Most references to height I have seen refer to base of rail. I can't find it right now, but I believe the standard was to set the base of the signal (the
top of the foundation) to the base of rail. There are standard drawings for the signals and signal parts at http://prr.railfan.net/si...p&sortby=1&rr=all.
The 1952 revision cites AAR signal specs. for painting the mast. There is also a scanned book that references the painting of signal equipment at http://prr.railfan.net/documents/CE234-b.pdf.
