I just re-motored and re-trucked an old Alco Models E44. It was about an 8 hour job, but well worth it, especially since they were the only HO E44's made. I believe Alpha Models may have made an E44a. As many of you are aware, the gear noise from these older brass models was terrible. The open frame motors were so big, the house lights would dim when you ran the engine
I used Bowser C628/630 drop equalizer trucks; they are the same wheelbase as the E44s. I also used a Bowser can motor. The job required removing the original bolsters and designing a new mounting system to accommodate the Bowser trucks and the motor.
I must admit I'm glad I only have one E44. I would not want to go thru this again!
