Posts: 1 (08/03/09 08:49 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Normally, I'm a New Haven modeler, But I have a few older Roco/Atlas FP7s (yes, yes I know..) that I want to modify & paint for Pennsy Passenger. I want to paint a A-B-A set of the PF7s in in the rare Tuscan (9832A, 9832B,9833A) scheme. Questions: Stripes. 1. Was the 5 Stripe scheme Gold Leaf or Buff on the PF7s? Did they change color before they were repainted in DGLE in the 1960s? 2. Is the Tuscan Red for the PF7s the same as the Passenger Car Tuscan Red ? 3. Did PF7s ever carry Trainphone antennas ? 4. DGLE Paint Scheme for F units: Stripes, again, Gold or Buff ? 5. Who makes the most accurate decals for both the Tuscan and DGLE schemes ? I would really appreciate and info you guys can provide.

Posts: 175 (08/03/09 11:04 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Hi John--For complete info please refer to Jack Consoli's excellent F units article in The Keystone, Vol. 37, No. 3 and Vol. 38, No. 1. To be precisely correct, only the A's were FP7; the B's were F7. However, all were classed EFP15 by the PRR due to their unique gearing and steam heat equipment. 9834A, 9834B and 9835A were also painted in the Tuscan red passenger scheme. Answers: 1. Neither. After 1952 all Tuscan Red engines, including the class EFP15 engines mentioned which were painted Tuscan Red in 1953, were to have imitation gold stripes. They retained this scheme until repainting in DGLE. 2. Yes. 3. All PRR FP7's were equipped with trainphone equipment. 4. Buff 5. My preference is Champ for both schemes. Posts: 672 (08/04/09 10:45 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Hey there John what period in time are you modelling? The FP7s underwent some changes. At some point many of them got "deskirted". I also have a pre-Penn Central shot of one of these in the final reduced PRR scheme. Totally brunswick green with just some keystones and the large numbers used. The odd thing is that they obviously intended to run 3 ABA tuscan sets, yet I don't think I have seen a picture of that. I probably have as many pix of tuscan units on freight as I do on passenger trains! I know I have at least one pix of a brunswick unit leading a passenger train. They are a little bit vexatious from the modelling standpoint. Atlas very first run of these used an oblong hatch where the steam generator hardware protrudes through the roof. This run is virtually not fixable. The second run corrected that hatch but installed a 48" dynamic brake fan where there should have been a 36" db fan. The good news is that they also did a version with no dynamic brakes, and you can notch the "dynamic brake depression" into the roof and install an aftermarket 36"fan. I have no experience with the Roco. The number boards always looked too big to me... I've never measured them, and that is fixable if they are truly mis-sized. The real problem with the Atlas units is the way they did not leave room for good coupler mountings on the B end of the unit. I gave up on this and simply drawbar hooked the 2 A units. There is simply waaaaaaay too much room between Atlas units hooked with their couplers, or Kadees, and I don;t see any way to put a recessed Kadee box in there. Mine do look good, but they are not great scale models. They pull quietly and are actually good pullers. The last two Reading units is a better match for the non-dynamic version. At any rate, if you give us a time target we can be more specific as far as what/what not for the PRR units. Intermountain and possibly Athearn are said to be issuing these soon. Bill

So they had 36" instead of 48" for the dynamic fans eh ? Good thing I have the Non-DB FP-7s instead of the DB. My objective was to do something interesting with these units as they have been sitting on the shelf for quite some time gathering dust. Since I am a mostly a New England modeler, and the nearest road that ran the FP-7s was the Pennsy, that's close enough for me ! :-) I have 1 photo of 9834A-9834B-9835 in the Pennsy Diesel Book by Carolton and it is the only shot I can find that actually shows the complete set. The Yanosey (sp?) books volume 1-6 mostly show the DGLE paint schemes with 1 or 2 shots 9835A in Tuscan. Any info you can provide would be a huge help. As soon as the budget allows, I do plan on ordering the CDs of all the keystones. I wish the NYCHS and the NHRHTA would do the same as you guys and convert all of their publications to CD. Posts: 229 (08/06/09 06:39 AM) Local user Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	John, in addition to Steve's recommendation on the special issues of The Keystone, and until you get your CD's or DVD, also consider the Pennsylvania Railroad Diesel Locomotive Pictorial, Volume Six, EMD and ALCo Freight Cab Units (aka "Withers Volume Six"), by Withers Publishing (www.witherspublishing.com). They are also working on EMD's FP7 and FP9 - The Dual-Service Cab Unit which has been delayed pending additional material. Regarding your models, I would not discourage you from going to work with them, but as Bill mentioned, Intermountain and Athearn Genesis are currently releasing FP7 models. I'm holding out for undecorated Athearn models as they are using existing Highliner shells and parts. I plan to model PRR and RF&P units circa 1956. Posts: 176 (08/06/09 12:34 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Hi John in Hawaii--If past practice for the Genesis line continues, you will not be able to get an undec FP7/9 from Athearn. You will have to obtain Highliner products. Currently Walthers shows the A unit kit 328-1001 not in stock, but the a shell alone, 328-1005, is available. With the FP7/9 conversion kit, 328-5001 available, you can be selective about what other Highliner parts you need. I should point out that the conversion process is not for the faint of heart, requiring that you cut up the A shell and the shell supplied in 328-5001 in the appropriate places and glue it all back together. You may want to consider Intermountain for a complete powered undec kit, 85-49994 (add an S for sound), which is a complete, very, very nice kit and available now. Just add CalScale antenna supports. I have had mine in service a couple of months, and they look great in front of some boxcars........ Steve Hoxie Pensacola FL

I'll wait until I end up with a damaged shell and then see what the conversion looks like. If it's too sloppy then I'll just go with decorated models. I'm Athearn Genesis/Highliner-loyal for F Units and have over a dozen powered chassis' already with almost as many undecorated shells and parts. Making the Intermountain switch is a little late for me. Ironically (psychotically), I model PRR electrified areas now, but we all go through stages, right? John

Posts: 12 (08/09/09 12:22 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Although not specifically a Genesis or Intermountain project, there was an article by Robert Kessler in the August 1997 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman titled "Modeling a Pennsy FP7" using the Atlas HO scale FP7 as a starting point. Robert models one of the Tuscan 5-stripe versions and a DGLE single stripe version as well as a Tuscan 5 stripe F7B. Article contains several prototype photos, three photos of the finished models and 4 detail photos of the modification and assembly process. Don Lower Arizona

Sure enough, they are available for preorder with a discount at Caboose Hobbies already. I really want to see how the production run goes with the Highliner parts. I doubt it will be a disappointment. John
