Is there any good source of horn information for PRR locomotives?
Something that would give the type of horn used on a particular model. I am looking for the type used on RS-3's and SD9's Any help would be appreciated. DAS |

This is an inexact answer, and I cannot remember the horn names but...
I have only ever seen the three chime all bells facing forward on the SD9. I certainly have NOT seen everything. RS3 units were purchased over a longer period of time. I have never modelled these, so I speak from a deficit of direct knowledge. Early FAs has single bells... later units had two chimes forward, one in reverse. I'd bet the RS3s would be similar, but a more authoritative source would be desirable. Then too, always remember that horns DID get changed out over time. You will stumble over 'later' pix with quite unexpected horns. I hope this helps. PRR is a pandoras box, sometimes... Bill |

I recently detailed an RS-3 to match a PRR loco. There were several runs and subclasses of RS-3s so there are many subtle variations possible. I used
"Pennsy Power 2" and "The Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1940s and 50s" as my photographic references. All photos I've ever seen of RS-3s
in the early 1950s had Nathan air horns on them; Either 2 or 3 horn versions. I chose a 3 horn version with two facing front and one facing the back (short
hood). It is Cal Scale part 190-400. Incidentally, I was happily surprised when I received the part in the mail to find that it comes with mounting brackets.
It is not pictured with them in the catalog.
