I own all the recent BLI steam (as well as the Heritage ex Y3), and I love the detail, control, and am OK with the price. However, what I really need is meduim sized steam. Those J and T class, and even the M and I are just too big for my 19'x15' pike, with 24 inch curves and 10 car trains. I had a fleet of MDC 2-8-0's (sand dome wrong, but better looking than Bowser to my eye), but they just don't get it on DCC. I was trying to get my Bowser L1 boiler kitbashed onto the BLI USRA 2-8-2 frame and it occured to me that if they took the K4 boiler and tender, the M1a pilot, and the USRA running gear, they'd be real close to an L1 anyway. The USRA has our valve gear. The drivers are 1" too big, but I'd live with it. My initial project was to graft the MDC H10 boilers onto any electronics age 2-8-0 gear that was resonably close. Bachmann had too convoluted motor casing/weight, and had other quality problems (even considered chopping the BLI 2-8-2, but motor location is a major hurdle). Next thought was using Athearn gen USRA, but mine shorts the rails on #4 switches. Please, somebody make an H9/10 with newer than 1950's technology! I need about six !!
